Bye bye, El Nino. Cooler hurricane-helping La Nina to replace the phenomenon that adds heat to Earth

  • BY SETH BORENSTEIN - AP Science Writer

The strong El Nino weather condition that added a bit of extra heat to already record warm global temperatures is gone. Forecasters expect its cool flip side, La Nina, to breeze in just in time for peak Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Thursday pronounced dead the El Nino that warms of parts of the central Pacific that formed a year ago. Earth's now in a neutral condition of the El Nino Southern Oscillation, which warps weather systems worldwide. But it likely won’t last. The agency says there’s a 65% chance that a cooling hurricane-helping La Nina will form soon.

Lionel Messi and defending champion Argentina still hungry for titles ahead of Copa America

  • By DÉBORA REY - Associated Press

Lionel Messi won the World Cup in 2022, won the Copa America in 2021, and wants to show he has the hunger to win some more. Argentina heads into this month’s South American soccer championship as the defending champion but with a team that’s slowly starting to rejuvenate. The tournament in the United States will gauge whether Messi will still be able to play at the next World Cup in 2026, when he’ll be 39. It will also test young talents like striker Alejandro Garnacho and mark the national team’s goodbye to veteran Ángel Di María.

Rafael Nadal says he will not play Wimbledon and instead will prepare for the Olympics in Sweden

  • By HOWARD FENDRICH - AP Tennis Writer

Rafael Nadal is going to skip Wimbledon, as expected, and instead prepare for the Paris Olympics by entering a clay-court tournament in Bastad, Sweden. The 22-time Grand Slam champion said Thursday he wants to just remain on clay, rather than switching over to grass for the All England Club and then needing to go back to clay. The Summer Games will hold the tennis competition at Roland Garros starting on July 27. That is the site of the French Open, where Nadal has won a record 14 titles. Nadal will play doubles — with Carlos Alcaraz — and singles at the OIympics. Wimbledon runs from July 1-14.

  • By MARIA SHERMAN - AP Music Writer

In 2021, you heard it: Moneybagg Yo’s “Wokesha” blaring from cars and corner stores. The undeniable song of the summer helped turn the Memphis rapper into a No. 1 artist. His fourth album, “A Gangsta’s Pain” topped the Billboard 200 that year, all but confirming his place atop the trap throne. Now, three years and one mixtape later, he’s dropping his fifth studio album, “Speak Now." He tells The Associated Press that he was “dealing with personal life” in that time, and that fans can expect a “summertime vibe” to the new album, which is stacked with features, including country star Morgan Wallen.

EU Commission asks 3 major p*rn sites to give details on kids' protection measures under digital law

  • AP

The European Commission is asking three of the world’s biggest p*rnography sites to provide details of the measures they have taken to better protect minors from accessing their content and prevent gender-based violence. The EU’s executive branch said Thursday that it took the decision targeting p*rnhub, XVideos and Stripchat under its trailblazing Digital Services Act. The DSA imposes a set of strict requirements designed to keep internet users safe online. The companies must provide information by July 4 or face fines. p*rnhub, XVideos and Stripchat have been classed as “very large online platforms” subject to more stringent controls under the Digital Services Act because they each have 45 million average monthly users.

Italy's G7 venue is a faux medieval luxury resort far from public view

  • By PAOLO SANTALUCIA and COLLEEN BARRY - Associated Press

Leaders of the Group of Seven rich democracies are meeting in a faux medieval town constructed as a luxury resort on the heel of Italy’s boot. Borgo Egnazia is nestled amid olive groves and prickly pear cacti in the southern Puglia region. It has reportedly hosted Madonna and the Beckhams. Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got married there. The summit venues have been located far from population centers since police clashed with anti-globalization protesters at the 2001 G8 meeting. This time, the main press center is in the city of Bari, in a different province two hours away with security checks.

The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits jumps to the highest level in 10 months

  • By MATT OTT - AP Business Writer

The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits jumped to the highest level in 10 months last week, another possible sign that the labor market is loosening under the weight of high interest rates. Unemployment benefit applications for the week ending June 8 rose by 13,000 to 242,000, up from 229,000 the week before, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That’s significantly more than the 225,000 new claims analysts were expecting. Weekly unemployment claims are seen as a stand-in for the number of U.S. layoffs in a given week and a sign of where the job market is headed.

Israel-Hamas war roils congressional race outside New York City, testing Democrats in pivotal clash

  • By ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE - Associated Press

The Israel-Hamas war is roiling a primary election between two Democrats in New York, testing the party’s position on the conflict and the larger split between its progressive and centrist wings. The race pits liberal Rep. Jamaal Bowman against centrist county official George Latimer. Bowman is known for his criticism of the Israeli government. Latimer entered the race with the backing of Jewish leaders in the suburban district north of New York City. Their divergent war positions have defined the race. The candidates present a compelling case study for the political divides within the Democratic Party, which has struggled to unify older, moderate voters and younger progressives.

Bulgarian ex-prime minister Borissov offers a coalition. But he doesn't want his old job back

  • AP

Former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has invited his political opponents to hold talks on forming a new government. Borissov's center-right GERB party emerged as the winner of Bulgaria’s parliamentary election. He told reporters Thursday at his party’s headquarters that he doesn't want to be prime minister. But he cautioned that there will be a government only if the prime minister is named by his party. Borissov proposed the formation of an expert Cabinet but insisted that the ministries of foreign affairs and defense should also be taken by GERB. Borissov said Bulgaria will head to another election in September if these conditions aren’t met and the other parties are thinking of revenge and avoid dialogue.

Home fans anxious to see if Germany can fire up Euro 2024 in opener against canny Scotland

  • By DANIELLA MATAR - AP Sports Writer

The sound of bagpipes and men in kilts on the streets of Munich mean Scotland is in town and the excitement is ramping up ahead of the European Championship curtainraiser on Friday. Host nation Germany plays Scotland at Allianz Arena in the opener of the month-long tournament. The final is in Berlin on July 14 and Germany is keener to get there after three straight fiascos at major tournaments. Scotland failed to reach the European Championship from 2000 to 2016 but has qualified for back-to-back tournaments. The next aim is to reach the knockout stage for the first time and confidence has been bolstered after a surprisingly good qualifying campaign.

Suspected attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels sees missile strike ship in Gulf of Aden, officials say

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

A suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels has seen a missile strike a ship in the Gulf of Aden. The attack happened Thursday in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen. That's according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center. The private security firm Ambrey said a merchant vessel made a radio distress call saying it had been struck by a missile. The Houthis did not immediately acknowledge Thursday’s attack, but it typically takes the rebels hours or even days to claim them. The attack follows the Houthis launching a boat-borne bomb attack against a commercial ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday. They've been attacking ships since November amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

US Open is the toughest test in golf from tee to green. At Pinehurst, it's mostly the greens

  • By DOUG FERGUSON - AP Golf Writer

The U.S. Open is underway at Pinehurst No. 2, and no one was expecting an easy time. The Donald Ross gem is hosting its fourth U.S. Open in the last 25 years. Only four players have finished under par in the previous three Opens combined. Tiger Woods is among the early starters. He was runner-up the last time he played Pinehurst No. 2. That was 19 years ago, before the course was restored to feature sandy areas instead of rough. But with Pinehurst, the signature has always been the domed greens that make it difficult to hold shots.

The UK Green Party struggles to be heard in an election where climate change is on the back burner

  • By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press

There’s lots of talk of change in Britain’s election campaign, but little talk about climate change. The U.K.’s July 4 vote to choose a new government is focused on the sluggish economy, high cost of living and creaking health care system. That frustrates the Green Party, which is battling to be heard in a political system that makes it hard for small parties to win seats in Parliament. Green candidate Sian Berry, who is running for Parliament in the coastal city of Brighton, says the bigger parties are wrong to ignore climate change and the environment. Many voters are sympathetic, but have other pressing concerns. Climate scientists, meanwhile, warn that Britain has gone into reverse on green energy.

Future of Elon Musk and Tesla are on the line as shareholders vote on massive pay package

  • By TOM KRISHER - AP Auto Writer

If Tesla shareholders approve an all-stock compensation package for CEO Elon Musk that was thrown out by a Delaware judge, it would almost guarantee he would remain at the company he grew to be the world leader in electric vehicles. If they vote against restoring Elon Musk’s $44.9 billion pay package Thursday, the CEO could deliver on threats to take artificial intelligence research to one of his other companies. Or he could even could walk away. Late Wednesday, Musk said on his social media platform X that early voting results indicated that they back his pay package and other company initiatives like re-incorporating Tesla in Texas, by “wide margins.”

Poland reintroduces restrictions on accessing areas along Belarus border due to migration pressure

  • AP

Poland has reintroduced restrictions on movement along parts of the border with Belarus because of increased migration pressure that has involved violence against Polish security officials. The ban taking effect Thursday is to be valid for 90 days. It imposes restrictions on movement along 60 kilometers or 37 miles of the land border between NATO member Poland and Belarus. The autocratic state is aligned with Russia. The government says that the purpose of the so-called buffer zone is to ensure the safety of outsiders as well as the border guards, soldiers and police who work in the area. It says it also hopes the measures will limit the activities of human smugglers who have been facilitating irregular migration at that border.
