Can you raise pheasants in Alberta? ›

Welcome to the 4-H Alberta Pheasant Project

4-H Alberta and the Alberta Conservation Association are partnering to provide to 4-H Alberta members, the opportunity to raise pheasants, from day old chicks to their release as 13 to 14 week old birds.

ACA agreed to take over the release program beginning in 2014, with the overall aim to provide greater hunting opportunity for all Albertans. We released 17,080 male pheasants for the fall hunting season in 2014 and have increased this number annually to a total of 28,830 in 2020, including 1,000 melanistic pheasants.

Pheasant Releases to Enhance Hunting Opportunities

To accommodate the high demand for hunting opportunities, the Government of Alberta started a hatchery in 1945 and created the Provincial Pheasant Release Program, which saw thousands of hatchery-raised pheasants released onto the landscape each fall.

With rolling hills and endless prairies, South Dakota is home to the best pheasant hunting in the country. With abundant public land hunting opportunities, pheasant hunters have access to some of the greatest spots to chase birds and work their dogs.

About 40% were killed by predators during the six-month study period, almost all by foxes—and the pheasants were far more likely to die toward the edge of their range. The findings show this was due to inexperience in these areas, because other birds that knew the same spots well were not likely to die there.

Successfully stocking pheasants is a numbers game. In a wild situation with great habitat expected survival rates of a pheasant chick through it's first birthday is about 30%. With released birds 20% survival of your stocked generation is a good starting point.

The Bornean peaco*ck-pheasant (Polyplectron schleiermacheri) is a medium-sized pheasant. It is probably the rarest and certainly the least known of all peaco*ck-pheasants. This elusive bird is endemic to lowland forests of Borneo.

This result is comparable to research indicating that survival of pen-reared pheasants can be as low as 4% (Buss 1946, Dorr 1952). In addition, although 49 hens were released in spring, only six hens were observed on nests.

(Note: In 2008, the ban on Sunday hunting was lifted across the province for game birds and in most of the province for big game. You cannot hunt on Sunday for big game only in a small portion of southeast Alberta.)

What kind of pheasants are in Alberta? ›

Ring-necked pheasants were introduced from east Asia. They are well-established in the wild in North America, but more are raised and released in Alberta every year as game birds. Gray Partridge are native to Europe and are also well-established here.

The arrival of cold and snow don't necessarily mean a death sentence for pheasants. In fact, these hardy birds can do remarkably well in even tough winters provided quality winter cover is available. Winter habitat includes grass cover for roosting at night, trees and shrubs to loaf in during the day, and food.
