Pheasants for sale - Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum (19)Pheasants for sale

Earlier this year there was an ad on Kijiji, Lloydminster with ring neck pheasants for sale. I e-mailed the advertiser and he said he would have pheasants available for sale this fall/winter.

But, I lost the e-mail address.

Anyone know who the person is and how to contact him? We are looking at 15 - 20 pheasants to release in the fall. I would rather get them close to home, than to drive all the way to Carstairs.

They are to be released on private land and I will be getting the required Game Bird Shooting Ground Licence.

I have seen them when I was looking previously. I will check out their rates, although if I recall they only sell chicks.

Years ago, when I was raising pheasants, we got some 6 week old chicks from Dirt Willy. Not sure if he sells adult birds.

Yes,Dirt Willey sells adult birds. However he is supplying birds for the provincial release program this year. He charged me $35 for a full grow co*ck pheasant this spring.

Ouch, that is pricey. We paid $25 for full grown roosters and $20 for hens at Wessex last fall.

Was it a Jumbo rooster you bought ?

Probably too far for the northern guys but we do a preseason special to reduce the number of surplus hen pheasants every year. this years special is 5 hens for dog training per person for $85. picked up or train here.

So if I were to release a bunch of pheasants around Stony Plain, would they survive and breed? I have plenty of Hungarian Partridges around...

Highly unlikely, at least in the long term. Some might make it through the winter if you provide them with some food/water/security.

Stony plain is too far north, I've heard of 2 different lines that are the north end of the pheasant range one is the red deer river, and the other is Highway 1. Either way stony plain is a ways further north than that, the snow just gets too deep and it is too cold up there for them to winter.

Thank you for the info. Might as well stick to the native species. Does anyone know of a place to get Hungarian Partridge chicks or eggs? Dirtwillie doesn't raise them, although he does have Meriams Turkey. Lol, they coyotes would love them!

I think you are probably better off with Chukars; they are considered a "non-game" species, whereas Huns, even if you release them, would be considered a wild game bird the first step out of the crate, and would be regulated by the existing seasons and such.

FYI, Huns are not native, they are introduced.

If you have plenty of Hun's around, why pollute them with raised birds?

Thank you again Pudelpointer. The name Hungarian Partridge kind of gives away the imported status. I have Viszlas after all Pheasants for sale - Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum (76)
I wouldn't pollute the local wild Hun population, simple supplement it. I found a few nests destroyed by coyotes (the likely culprit around here), and have seen less birds this summer than during previous years.
It isn't a necessity for me to hunt the birds year around. If all goes well I'll have a female Redtail Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) ready to go by next season. Falconry permits me to hunt them from August 15th to March 31st.

All you need is a $100.00 permit to release Huns and hunt them anytime for training or what ever. As long as they are on the permitted property. I believe you can get chicks from manitoba or ontario. Can't remember the name of the company though.

They survive just fine in Grande Prairie. Found a good number up there when I was living up there.
